If you have been in the blogging space for a while, by now you would heard bloggers going on and on about starting an email list at the inception of your blog. After all, there is much truth in the saying there is money in the list. This is also why it is important not just to start but also to be nurturing your email list if you created one, and if you haven’t done so yet, what are you waiting for? Once you’ve created your email list, keep your audience engaged and informed. This will make it easier for your audience to buy products and services you may try to sell in the future.
While sending out emails itself isn’t difficult, it requires you to employ several strategies to take advantage of this business/ blogging tool. Check other blogging tools I use to run a successful blog. Here are a few things you should take note of:
- Create an email list from the commencement of your blog, yes that’s even before you have traffic.
- You’ll soon realize that most of the money in your blogging business comes from your email list.
Starting an email list alone will not make you money; you need to use strategy, proven strategies to see your website visitors joining your email and become paying customers. However, if you have already created an email list and all you hear are crickets, you may be making some of these common mistakes.
1 I You Haven’t Been Promoting Your Content
Blogging is hard work! From blog design, setup, writing, publishing, and promoting. That’s why you have to make all that effort count. It does not matter how well-designed your website is or how great your written posts are. People aren’t going to discover your website magically. To get publicity for your blog, you’ll have to promote, promote, promote! And some places to promote your blog posts are on different social media channels. The first platform I recommend starting with is PINTEREST. Pinterest will help you reach your ideal audience, but be sure to have your account correctly set up. If you need help setting up your Pinterest business account and increase website traffic, check out this blog post.
If you have the budget and sufficient content on your blog, you may consider paying for Facebook Ads to boost your reach. Another way you can build an audience for your blog is through email marketing. Use emails to nurture your audience, building a relationship, and sell your products and services. Start your email list today with Flodesk and create opt-ins that will convert your website visitors into subscribers. Let’s talk about other reasons why no one is joining your email list and what you can do to fix that!
2 I You Are Not Offering a Content Upgrade
A great way to turn your website visitors into subscribers is by offering a content upgrade or freebie. If people are visiting your blog, chances are they are looking for answers to their pain point. Therefore, you are most likely to get them on your list by offering them something valuable in exchange for their email. Some examples of content upgrade ideas are a PDF download of an ebook, checklist, templates, worksheets, etc. If you are unsure of, want to offer to your subscribers as a freebie, consider turning a popular blog post into an ebook and attach it to a signup form on your blog. Once your visitors sign up, they will receive your valuable ebook. For my opt-ins, I use Flodesk. This blog post is a step-by-step tutorial on creating opt-ins with Flodesk.
3 I You Are Requesting Too Much Information
When creating signup forms for your blog, limit the number of fields on the form. Truth be told, you only need to request your subscriber’s name and email address. Make it as easy as possible for your visitors to join your email list.
4 I Your Signup Forms Are Not Visible
Let me cut to the chase and say it. A single opt-in form will not get visitors to join your email; you have a higher chance of them missing it than having them sign up. Consider these locations for the placement of your opt-in forms.
- The header of your blog
- Side bar
- Within a post
- At the end of a post
- Exit intent pop-up
Adding a sign up form in all these location most likely increase signups.
6 I Your Readers Don’t See The Benefit of Joining Your Email List
Requesting casual signup for weekly content is certainly not compelling enough to get people onto your email list. Keep in mind that many other businesses are trying to get the same address as you, but incentivizing your signup will help people see value in joining your list. Let your readers know exactly what they will be getting after signing up. For example, a PDF Pinterest SEO Strategies, Blogging Startup Ebook, etc., allow your audience to see the value in them joining your list.
7 I Your Signup Forms Are Not Mobile Friendly
This mistake is a big deal-breaker, most of your visitors will most likely be visiting your website from a mobile phone, and if they can’t see your signup form, you will be missing out on potential subscribers. Here are some tips to bear in mind for mobile users:
- Use an email marketing platform with mobile-optimized email templates.
- Things look a lot different on desktop compared to mobile. Preview your emails on your mobile so you can see things just as your subscribers would. Make adjustments as needed.
- Increase your text size, so your text is more legible on mobile.
- Add your call to action (CTA) to your button. Make your message short and sweet like “Join List,” “Buy Now,” or “Signup.” The longer messages could get lost for users on mobile.
Most of all, if you are trying to elevate your blogging business to a level of success. Consider creating content that will attract visitors to your blog who will become subscribers.
